Quinn narrates how she and Graham meet one day because her fiancé and his girlfriend are cheating on them with each other. Will a reminder of their old love for each other be enough to bring them back together? Graham meanwhile, loves Quinn but fears he is no longer enough for her. After battling infertility for years Quinn believes Graham would be better off with another woman. Graham intended the box, containing love letters they had written to one another, to be opened on their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary as a reminder of how strong their love had remained. In the novel All Your Perfects by Colleen Hoover, Quinn and Graham never believed they would have to open the wooden box, their marriage survival kit, that Graham gave Quinn on their wedding day. What each book does incredibly well, and what sets these stories in my mind apart from the myriad of other fantasy novels, is the big, climactic fight scenes. I was emotionally invested in the fate of these characters. The central narratives of these books are interesting, but I don’t think I would have cared if the people inside weren’t so compelling. I’d argue that Kings of the Wyld and Bloody Rose succeed based on these characters more than the big plot points. Not everyone is as nice of a person as Cooper (who appears in both books), but every character readers meet feels fully realized and realistic. Clay Cooper, the protagonist of Kings of the Wyld, is big-hearted, a little sarcastic, and genuinely wants to do the right thing whenever he can. While the concepts of adventuring bands is interesting enough on its own, Eames populates the pages of his books with well-written, complex characters. Just like in the real world, some bands are more popular than others, and those who have retired often want to relive their glory days. In Eames’ creation, adventurers form “Bands” (with obvious parallels to musicians) to slay monsters, save people, or perform any other heroic deeds. Before getting to the big scenes that are so compelling, it’s worth spending a few sentences on the world that both books operate in. When he recovered, he took it as a sign of divine providence and abandoned his legal career in favor of ecclesiastical pursuits. Shortly after the publication of this work, he fell seriously ill. The two unpublished stories ('The Donnington Affair' and 'The Mask of Midas') should have remained so. Really, though, it is worth buying the substantial Penguin Complete, which contains all of them: in my ranking system, only scores of 4 and below correspond to ‘unreadable’. The stories were published over a period of about 20 years, and get steadily worse as time goes on, although his last book, The Scandal of Father Brown, is a late flowering. Flambeau, his sometime nemesis and sometime companion, is a vast athletic French cat burglar. Father Brown is a Catholic priest and amateur detective, much given to Chestertonian pontificating. I admire their freedom with genre and setting, jumping easily from Gothic horror (‘The Worst Crime in the World’) to Italian banditry (‘The Paradise of Thieves’) to quintessential British sci-fi which wouldn’t be out of place in Doctor Who (the army of robotic household servants from ‘The Invisible Man’). Chesterton’s Father Brown stories, which to my taste are the best short mystery stories I’ve read.
